Lithium Battery Testing

JFM Engineering can provide you with equipment, software and assistance to satisfy your needs to charge and test Lithium batteries.

Chargers manufactured by JFM Engineering (MMC and SMC) are precision instruments that have a very accurate and sharp transition from Constant Current to Constant Voltage making them well suited for the precise charging voltages required for Lithium batteries.

But, equally important as the charger is the need for cell balancing.

Unlike other batteries, that are more tolerant of overcharge, Lithium cells can explode and ignite if overcharged.

Safe charging of Lithium batteries requires circuitry to shunt excess current when the cells reach the maximum voltage level determined by the manufacturer.

If the battery being charged has internal balancing circuits then the only requirement is to control the charge voltage and initial current to the levels specified by the battery manufacturer.

If not, it is absolutely necessary to attach an external device that will monitor each cell and provide excess current shunting.

JFM Engineering can design and manufacture the balancing circuits to satisfy the requirements of a variety of battery A-Hr ratings. Contact JFM’s Engineering Department for requirements.

JFM Engineering also has a Battery Test System that can be used to monitor the performance of individual Lithium cells, in charge and discharge, with the same features of our current system for aviation Nickel-Cadmium batteries..
